Artist Statement
In the grand tradition of Italian Renaissance gardens, where mechanical wonders like singing birds and fluttering automata captivated audiences with their blend of art, nature, and technology, my work continues this legacy of innovation. Inspired by the Renaissance fascination with blending artifice and nature to evoke wonder, I harness the power of AI as a modern "magic invoking machine," weaving together the threads of Renaissance elegance and the cutting-edge potential of artificial intelligence. This fusion creates surprising spaces of beauty, where floral arrangements become visual riddles that inspire viewers to explore the enchanting intersection of fantasy and reality.
My paintings are innately floral, influenced by the works of Renaissance artists such as Raphael, Botticelli, and Fra Angelico. Like their compositions, my work is characterized by soft color palettes and fantastical motifs, embodying a sense of ethereal beauty while balancing the earthly with the imaginative. The grotesques in the Vatican Loggias, which reinterpreted Roman frescoes discovered in the Domus Aurea, featuring mythical creatures, delicate vegetal patterns, and bright colors, have inspired my approach. These elements—playful reinterpretations of classical themes, whimsical designs that defy logic, and a mastery of light—are central to my artistic vision.
The automata that graced Renaissance "giardino segreto" (secret gardens) also inform my work’s conceptual framework. These early marvels of ingenuity, designed to surprise and delight with their fluid and kinetic movements, foreshadowed humanity's enduring fascination with merging artifice and nature. Today, AI serves as a kindred spirit to these mechanical wonders, enabling me to craft innovative, semi-autonomous visions that blend human imagination with technological ingenuity. This synergy reflects a timeless pursuit of creating beauty and wonder through experimentation and invention.
My unique oil paintings are highly detailed, with a matte finish that echoes the luminosity of frescoes, offering a decorative allure that blends aesthetics with intellectual curiosity. The works are hybrid creations—AI-generated visions shaped by human touch with a level of precision reminiscent of trompe l’oeil ("fool the eye")—yet they carry an enigmatic twist. The physical versions are hand-painted manifestations of digital creations using oil and minute brushes on state-of-the-art panels, designed to withstand the test of time better than traditional materials. This collaborative approach integrates technology into traditional art-making without relinquishing creative control. By pushing beyond boundaries and beyond brushes, my work embodies the spirit of forward-thinking creativity, embracing the potential of a technological renaissance, positioning itself at the forefront of artistic innovation in the modern era.
